A lot of our guests are real Jane Austen buffs on their way to Austen’s cottage in Chawton, where she used to live. It is in this cottage that Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility were written. Nowadays it is a popular museum displaying aspects of Jane Austen’s life and writings. Even if you are not a fan of Jane Austen, then there is a still lot to see and do in Chawton and the surrounding area including visiting the Watercress Line and having a ride on Thomas The Tank Engine. |

The Swan dates back to 1377 and retains many of its original features. The intimate restaurant serves traditional dishes and has an extensive wine list. Guests include many people of sense and sensibility - that is to say, devotees of Jane Austen, who make their pilgrimage to her cottage in the Chawton area of Alton during their stay with us. The cottage is now a popular tourist attraction and museum dedicated to Janes life and work. Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice were written here. But you dont have to be a fan of Jane Austen to enjoy the pretty village of Chawton or the attractions of the Swan Hotel. |
