Pevensey village is just 4 miles from the sea and is part of the Cinque Ports, a group of towns that pledged to supply men and ships to fight against invasion. The area was renowned for smuggling. Nearby attractions include: Pevensey Castle (1 mile) is one of 9 forts that stood defending the south coast against Saxon Invaders and stands on the site of the old Roman fort where William the Conqueror camped before the Battle of Hastings. Other attractions include the Napoleonic Martello Towers and Plumpton Race Course as well at the Herstmonceux Science Museum, Eastbourne Golfing Park, Langney Shopping Centre and a Miniature Steam Railway. |
