Ascot Racecourse
The history of Ascot Racecourse goes back nearly 300 years. It was Queen Anne who first saw the potential of a racecourse for Ascot, which in those days was known at East Cote. Whilst out riding she came across an area of open heath, not far from Windsor Castle, that seemed an ideal place for horses to gallop at full stretch.
The racecourse was built in 1711 on the orders of Queen Anne and the first race meeting was held there on Saturday, 11 August that year. Her Majestys Plate, worth 100 guineas was the inaugural event, open to any horse, mare or gelding over the age of six. The plate prizes were reputedly paid for using money from the secret service fund.
With its sleek, lean horses and marvellous millinery, jockeys in bright silks and roaring crowds, Royal Ascot is one of the most colourful and popular events of the British summer season. This famous week of horse racing is held at Ascot Racecourse near Windsor Castle in the third week of June each year. This years meeting will be held from Tuesday 17 June to Saturday 21 June.

Windsor Castle
Over a period of nearly 1,000 years it has been inhabited continuously, and altered and refurbished by successive monarchs. Some were great builders, strengthening the Castle against uprising and rebellion; others, living in more peaceful times, created a palatial Royal residence. William the Conqueror chose the site, high above the river Thames and on the edge of a Saxon hunting ground. It was a days march from the Tower of London and intended to guard the western approaches to the capital.
The twentieth-century history of the Castle is dominated by the major fire that started on 20 November 1992. It began in the Private Chapel, when a spotlight came into contact with a curtain and ignited the material.

The next five years were spent restoring Windsor Castle to its former glory. It resulted in the greatest historic building project to have been undertaken in this country in the twentieth century, reviving many traditional crafts. The restoration was completed six months ahead of schedule on 20 November 1997 at a cost of £37 million (US $59.2 million), £3 million below budget. Seventy per cent of the necessary revenue was raised from opening Buckingham Palaces State Rooms to visitors in August and September.

To mark the completion, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh held a thank you reception in the restored rooms on 14 November 1997 for 1,500 contractors. On 20 November that year they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with a ball also held at Windsor Castle.

Henley Royal Regatta
In 1829 a boat race challenge was held between teams representing the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The venue chosen was a straight stretch of the Thames at the small town of Henley (or more properly, Henley-on-Thames). Even though The Boat Race between the university teams was moved to a course closer to London, the first Henley Regatta was inaugurated in 1839.
The regatta proper takes up five days in early July, but for weeks either side of the event the river banks are crammed with marquees and observation stands. There are now so many entries for events that qualifying races are held throughout the week before the regatta proper, so if youd like to take in world class rowing without the crowds, arrive then.
Throughout the Victorian period Henley became a major social event, and the regatta is still descended upon by the English upper classes every year. Henley itself is a lovely town, with many medieval buildings of character and charm, including the church of Saint Mary, which has 13th century underpinnings beneath its Victorian facade. There is a 14th century chantry house attached to the church.

Reading Festival
The first thing you need to know is this is not a reading festival where you bring books and read them. The Reading Festival actually started as a jazz festival, but you wouldnt realise it now. In the 1990s it firmly established itself as the premier music festival for alternative/indie music. There have been many great performances given by a host of seminal acts. Bands like The Pixies, Prodigy, The Beastie Boys and Public Enemy have all played at Reading
Its a rock festival, its very good and its held in Reading, Berkshire in England every year on the August Bank Holiday weekend.
