The lounge bar has a traditional Cotswold pub atmosphere and in the winter it benefits from a roaring log fire. There is a large choice of real ales and numerous CAMRA awards have been won in recent years. The Indian restaurant, The Maharaja, serves authentic Indian cuisine. It mainly serves firm favourites, but also new and exciting dishes specially prepared by the chef. The variety of starters combine a glorious fusion of flavours and exotic tastes from varied regions across Asia. Dishes are prepared with a fine regard for their original cooking methods and tastes. Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the UK. The name Campden or Camperdene is believed to be a Saxon name meaning valley with fields, and the word Chipping means market. The High Street is full of many Cotswold stone buildings constructed between the 14th and 17th centuries, and is now a conservation area. This locally owned 17th century inn, is crammed with history, traditional local cask ales and plenty of character, and stands at the lower end of Chipping Campdens historic High Street. The inn is set in the small Cotswold town of Chipping Campden, an area renowned for its natural beauty. It has a peaceful position within a few hundred yards of the town centre. It is located at the start of the Cotswold Way - a well known walk along the Cotswold Hill to Bath The inn was named The Volunteer in the mid 1800s because local men used to sign on there for the volunteer armies.
