Lourdes already existed in Roman times. The Romans built Mirambel Château-Fort, which still today dominates the city from atop its 42-meter-high rock. Saracens, Charles the Great, Mirat, the Albigenses and the English successively occupied Lourdes between the VIIIth and the XVth century. In 1406, the French took over. But Lourdes is, of course, first and foremost, a center of Christian pilgrimage. The citys hospitality infrastructure is perfectly adequate for welcoming pilgrims from around the world.
