Neuschwanstein Castle, probably the most famous of Ludwig IIs constructions, is close by in a highly dramatic location on a cliff over the Pöllat Gorgen at the shore of Lake Forggensee. The interior is styled on German chivalric legends and the operas of Richard Wagner. Lindnerhof Palace was built in 1878. With its richly ornamented facade and the beautifully landscaped park, the palace also features the famous open sesame rock. The rock leads to the artificial Venus Grotto with a waterfall and lake. Last but not least, there is the King’s House on Schachen. Ludwig II selected a unique setting with a view of the Zugspitz-massif for a mountain lodge. The wooden building can only reached on foot, either from Elmau or Garmisch-Partenkirchen. |

By car: - Take the A95 from Munich to the end of the motorway. - Follow the B2 through Oberau. - After the Farchant tunnel, take the Fernpass-Reute-Grainau via the B23 motorway route to Garmisch. - 1 km after the sign for Garmisch, with an AGIP petrol station on the left hand side, proceed for 300 metres at the next traffic signal. - Turn right onto the Loisachstraße (hotel is at 100 metres). |
