| Founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century B.C., Agrigento became one of the leading cities of the Mediterranean world. Situated on the island of Sicily it is universally known for the spectacular Valley of Temples, the sacred area of ancient Akragas, one of the most important colonies of the Greek Empire. Mountains and hills are the dominant elements of Agrigento and the surrounding countryside. From Agrigento, the ancient Akragas, there is an absolutely exceptional panorama: opposite the modern city you will find the Valley of Temples, majestic and full of flowers, one of the most interesting and evocative archaeological areas in the whole Mediterranean. The temples of Concord, Hera, Zeus, Hercules, Castor and Pollux follow one another in an archaeological promenade which is unique in the world and bears witness to the past splendour of this city which was among the most magnificent and powerful of the antiquity. The Archaeological Museum is rich in finds dating from that time (as well as objects from the province) and is an absolute must for the visitor. Of course Agrigento, in addition to its archaeological area, is also interesting for its historic town centre, in which the Cathedral founded by the Norman (11th century) and Santo Spirito church dating back to the 12th century with a noteworthy Baroque stucco work interior, are particularly interesting. One can also visit the church of S. Maria dei Greci, built in the 7th century on the foundations of a Greek temple dedicated to Athena and the house of the writer and playwright Luigi Pirandello, which is now a museum. Agrigentos economy is based on sulfur and potash mining, agriculture and tourism. Here you can also find rich deposits of asphalt, salt, marble and volcanic phenomena such as hot springs, gas emissions and mud volcanoes. The city is served by Porto Empedocle wich provides Agrigentos sea communications, the best harbour on the southwest coast of Sicily and Italys principal sulfur port. But Agrigento is also the seaside. Clear, clean, blue waters for many kilometers of sandy beaches and white cliffs, from Punta Bianca to Porto Empedocle with San Leone as an excellent point of reference. With its small tourist port it is an ideal place for sailors. Sails and motorboats add color to the crystal clear waters. Agrigento is a desirable place where a long stay is delightful. From December to February the almond-trees in flower give the Templesvalley a special glamour and an unusual charm. |
