A modest and quiet city, Pisa is a renowned cultural destination of architectural interest beyond the commercial and industrial centre. The Romans founded the city, giving it a typical chessboard plan that now forms the base of the old city. In this period, it was a lagoon city on the sea. Later on, Pisa was the rich province of Ugolino della Gherardesca, the mayor who inspired Dante Alighieri to write one of the most celebrated passages of his journey through Hell (Inferno) in “The Divine Comedy”. After mixed fortunes, the city was conquered by Florence. Out of scorn, all of the house-towers of the city, symbols of power and supremacy, were reduced to the height of the shortest Florentine house-towers. The destruction continued with the slow loss of the port that was gradually filling up. Today however, Pisa offers you splendid chances to visit the Campo dei Miracoli, one of the most beautiful squares in the world and one of the symbols of Italy for tourists. Limiting a visit to Pisa to only the Campo dei Miracoli would be a shame though, as the city has much more to offer from an urban and historical artistic point of view. For example, whoever wants to enrich and complete his or her knowledge of sculpture and paintings from the golden centuries of the city must not neglect a visit to the Pisan museums. |
