Dom Aktora is close to the centre of Gdansk and there are many places of interest close by, including Mariacka Street and the church. All of Gdansk’s Old Town and its many museums, galleries and famous buildings are within walking distance. The crane over the Motlawa River (0.2 km) – Gdansk is the Polish maritime capital and the crane is one of its oldest and most famous landmarks. The crane once played a double role as a port crane and as Gdansk’s city gate. It has been in its present form since 1442-1444. The machinery of the crane is driven by a huge wooden wheel inside it, which was powered by men walking on it, like a giant hamster wheel. The crane was not only used to unload and reload cargo, it was also used to put up ships’ masts. |
